I plan on moving these over but we'll see how that process goes. In the meantime, I will be adding my new posts to the new blog. Family/School/Work has been keeping me extremely busy and I want to reinforce the word "extremely." Another semester has passed. In that time, we took a trip back to Oklahoma to see my Dad and the rest of my family back there. It was an awesome trip and I do have some pix from there that I will post soon.

I finished up my advanced SolidWorks class. This semester rocked my world. I need to take my family to the Del Mar Fair (yeah I still call it that) to see if my final project got posted for public viewing. Work has been crazy busy lately. This is a good thing.

Besides that, I haven't shot too much. I did do a model shoot last weekend though. I have the initial JPGS but I need to finish the files before posting. I've also been trying to videotape the kids a bit more. Jayden is so cute right now. Her vocabulary is increasing at a staggering rate.

I have put down the XBOX360 controller and hung up a lot of my Halo 3 late nights so I can work on my guitar and my photography. I've also started working out again because of my fast food eating during the semester. 15 pounds comes on fast and I need to get back down.

That's about it for now for catching up. I will update again when the new blog has some content worth reading. Until then, I hope everyone is doing well.

Chris

My Little Sis is Engaged

My little sister and her fiance planned a trip out to California for Christmas this year. It was nice having her and Danny here together for the first time. They brought out their cool little "kids" so they could enjoy the festivities as well.

She had inquired about me doing her engagement session and of course I had to step up. We went down to Balboa Park. I haven't personally shot down there before this but knew there were a million photo opportunities. Needless to say, we bounced around from location to location until it was dark. Afterwards, we stopped off and got a Mexican Mocha from a little stand. Let's just say, yuuuuuummmmmm!

Rob joined us on the shoot. We both clicked away and got some really cool photos. Thanks Rob for heading down there with us.

Now that school is over for winter break, I should have some time to get back on the PC to edit some photos. I have a bunch of cool stuff of the kids during the holidays. Jayden is getting big and Jake is such a big help.

In the meantime, enjoy some more photos from the engagement session.

Steve & Kerry

Here are some teaser images from Steve & Kerry's wedding this last weekend. It was a very cool wedding and I'm really happy with the images. Steve & Kerry were great to work with! Rob assisted me on this shoot and I can't thank him enough for the help. I got through the culling phase tonight and started working on the post processing. There are a lot more that will probably be put into a slideshow.

It's going to be a short post tonight as it's really late (or early depending on how you count time). I will be heading over to Rob's tomorrow to go through his images so I probably won't be posting tomorrow. Give me a few more days to get through some more edits and I'll start working on the slideshow. I wanted to play around with cropping and this image lent itself for the task. Because I usually use my 70-200mm, I do a lot of cropping in camera. Although I like cropping in the camera, it does kind of limit the possibilities with an image. The crop below is a 4x8 crop of the image above. The only difference between the two images is the amount of sharpening in certain areas.

It's a short post tonight but I think the last few nights are catching up to me and I'm exhausted. This photo was made during one of Jake's baseball games while Jayden was playing around. I think detail shots are extremely important, especially of the little one's because they do grow so fast. I can't believe she's already 16 months old.
For the final image, I went for a cross-processing look on this one with some de-saturation of the grass and her pants. Well, I decided on this one instead. The joy Jayden gets while playing with her brother is just too cute. Like I said before, she's not afraid to get in the ring with people. In this case, the grassy octagon.
This was shot with my 85mm f/1.8 lens. I like using a fixed lens when I need to push myself to move around. The post from last night was shot with the same lens. I really love this lens. The images are crisp and it makes me move around which is a good thing.
Tonight, you get the joy of getting two versions of this image. I would like to know your comments on which version you like better. Just for the record, I am still undecided on which one I prefer.
Until next time...

Flowers for Daddy

Last night, we were in the middle of watching the Chargers game against the Jets and the kids wanted to be outside. After playing a little catch with Jake and Jayden yesterday, Jayden decided she wanted to be a girly girl and pick some flowers for me. It's a complete trip watching her. She will go from throwing a football one minute to picking flowers the next.
She has some of the cutest expressions. About 5 minutes after picking flowers and posing for pix, it was time for the girly girl to start wrestling around with the boys. I would like to think that Jake is going to a protective big brother but I have a feeling Jayden will be able to handle her own. She's a tough one and gets a kick out of wresting around with brother. I have another shot of her conquering her big brother as she's yelling at his buddy, Anthony. I plan on putting that up sometime this week but you know how that goes.

Window Light

We went up to Monica's house yesterday. Jordan stayed with us for the night Friday to hang out and play with Jake for a bit. We were just sitting around and Jayden was walking around. It was a pretty cool moment because as I was thinking it, Jess said, "Look at the way the light is hitting her." I quickly grabbed the camera and then the fun began. Anyone who has worked with kids knows that as soon as you want them to do something, that becomes the farthest thing from their little mind. It took about 7 shots before I finally got this one. There was a stick in the plant that she wanted to play with. I tried to get her attention by showing her how to pet the plant like she does with the cats but she wasn't having anything to do with it. She started swinging at the fences towards the plant (Jayden does have quite the attitude). For whatever reason, she just kind of chilled out for a split second and I was able to grab the shot.
The image was shot at ISO 1600 so I ran some noise reduction on the image and then went to town on the processing. Luckily, I have found quite a few filters that I tend to always play with and it makes it easier on my time. I still play around with some other filters but I am digging the Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 filters.
I love capturing these moments. Once again, I can't reiterate enough why having a camera with you at all times is a wonderful thing. I have mine in my bag with the 24-70mm f/2.8 mounted at all times. For whatever reason, I tend to use this lens anywhere from 50-70mm. I am still working on getting wide-angle shots that I like. I might like them more once I get the 5D so I can use the full lens view.
In the meantime, enjoy the photo and leave some comments if you have the time.

Chris

Pano's

After going to the Sallee's seminar last month and seeing some of their amazing panoramic shots, I decided to get outta my box and try some. The Sallee's have some great work. I went with the intention of getting some marketing ideas but learned so much more. The 5 hours seemed to fly and the Sallee's are really cool. A few of us hung out with them afterwards which was really fun. We had a chance to talk about various things and I was able to pick their brain a little more. Mainly I just listened. They had so much information to pass on. I have been really contemplating going back to school this last year to further my electronics career but I have passed that up so I can invest more time and energy into my photography. Going to seminars is one of my investments and it has paid off tremendously. I feel so much more comfortable on shoots than before and my photography is taking on a higher level.

I am in the process of designing an album of the kids and will be posting various images that are going to be in the book. This is one of the images. I have a spread that contains this image processed 3 different ways and it looks really cool. That was another thing that was reinforced at the Sallee seminar: shooting for the album. That's the 3rd seminar I have heard that phrase and you wouldn't believe how much it helps with "What should I shoot next?" I am learning more about going in with a page spread in mind so I can get the shots I need. Not every shot is thought of in that way. There are some moments, especially with kids, where you don't have the time to visualize the page. I'm just capturing the moments as they happen and sometimes the images will present themselves as I am going through the selection phase.

I hope you enjoy the photo and thanks for checking in.

Until next time...

Look at the Pretty Colors

We went to dinner tonight with my brother and stopped off at the local Acapulco's. Not like I don't eat enough mexican food throughout the week but what's one more stop (I had a carne asada burrito for lunch today as well)? Anyway, we had just finished eating and Jayden wanted to go for a walk around the outside dining area. We stopped by the flowers and I whipped out the camera once I saw that she was interested in the flowers. This is a key reason I keep my camera with me at all times. I get a lot of crap from people because I am always lugging this bad dog around but this shows why I don't mind carrying an extra 25lbs of gear with me...ALL THE TIME. I might go days without taking a picture but I always have my gear with me. Jake calls my backpack my baby which is quite true. Photos like this though show why I love carrying around my babies.

Tomorrow will have another flower photo post from tonight's after dinner walk.

Jayden's First Birthday

Look at that face. What an adorable little boo. Considering she was pretty darn sick about a week before this, the smile was extra special. Jayden caught some bug that was going around and she was pretty mellow through the Mother's Day weekend. For Mother's Day, I sent Jess and Jake to a Padres game. It was good for them because they don't get to spend much time together like they used to. For one, Jayden takes up a lot of Jess' time. Secondly, Jake is kinda going through a phase where hanging out with Mom & Dad ain't what it used to be. Anyway, that Sunday was probably the most quietest day in our house for a long time. Jayden literally slept most of the day and when she did get up, all she wanted to do was lay her little head down on mommy or daddy. She definitely wasn't our normal little fireball. She felt pretty crappy up until Tuesday and then my little firecracker came back to life.

Right now is so cool because she finally started walking. She's only taken a few spills but we keep a really close eye on her because of all the tile in our house. Now she feels like an independent woman and she is off and going. Now if I could just get her to give me some shoogies. She shakes her head no when I ask her to give me some shoogies. It is pretty darn cute.

Well, I hope you all enjoy the photos. Her hair was a freaking rat's nest and we had to do something about it. Little milestones like this are such an eye opener for how fast time goes by. Her 1st birthday was last month and we took her to the same place we took Jake for his first haircut. Jess went all out for this birthday. She spent countless hours on the invitations and all the other little trinkets for the big day. Jake had a baseball game that day so I was busy watching him while the ladies got the decorations set up. All in all, I think the day went great. We appreciate all the attendance and wish others could have been there.

Jake's baseball season is over so hopefully I will have some more time to post. It has been crazy around here for the past few months. Jayden is finally walking and she is about to become a model for daddy. More seminars are coming up and I have been doing a lot of studying and not doing. It's time to play around some more.

We hope everyone is doing well and we will talk to you soon.

Little Girl's Getting Big

Here's baby Jayden crawling around in the park after I got done with some baseball practice with Jake. I've been working with some new devices that are totally changing the way I photograph now. That was part of the reason for the lack of posts this last two months. I have been going to seminars and learning new tools along with Jake's baseball practices and games. It's taken a while to get myself accustomed to the new tools and workflow but the return on investment is paying off. Now I just need to get some more clients to try out my new stuff. In the meantime, I will be using my two main models. They're a tough duo to beat.

I hope you enjoy the photo. I will have more sometime this week with Jayden standing on her own. Tonight's image is of the big J-dawg booking it to third base! This was during the first game of the season and it is great to see him enjoying baseball so much. I have been helping out at the practices and it's pretty cool to see how far some of the kids have come in such a short time. We're really happy with the coaches and it's so cool to see Jake enjoying sports.

His batting has been improving and this weekend he hit a triple! The ball soared over the second baseman and then right between center and right field. He has been rotated through various positions and enjoys all of them. He's great in the outfield due to his throwing ability. The kid can throw a ball. It's just great that he finally came to me wanting to play a sport. I didn't want to push him into something. I think it's better for them to let you know they're ready. On top of that, he is also kicking booty in school. We couldn't be more proud of our little dude!

There will be plenty more photos as the season goes on. I processed a few other photos tonight so I should have some more to post this week. I finally got Adobe's Lightroom software and it is pretty cool what this software is capable of. The last week has been spent getting familiar with the program and implementing it into my workflow. More like a workflow overhaul but it's a good thing.

Back Again

It's been a while since my last post. I will be posting some pix of the kids in the next few weeks.

I took Jake to Super Cross at Qualcomm a couple weeks ago. These chairs were set up for some play that was either taking place later on or had already taken place and they made for a nice patterned background. It was starting to get dark at this point but I was still able to pull off some shots with the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.

Hopefully everyone's Christmas was as good as ours. Jacob got hooked up with a bunch of goodies and Jayden enjoyed her first Christmas. We started off the day hanging out at my mom's house. My sister is in from Arizona and we had a nice time visiting with her. My brother hooked me up with some bowling items so I can eventually join his team. I never thought I would enjoy bowling so much but it is actually quite fun. It also gives me time to hang out with my bro which is always an adventure. Jess got most of the items she was wanting as well. It's so tough to get in the Christmas spirit when the weather is as beautiful as it was today. The rest of the country is in heavy snow storms and I wore shorts and a T-shirt all day! We also hung out with Jess' family which was nice as we don't hang out as often as we should. We finished off the day with a prime rib dinner and a call to my dad. Maybe I can get him out here sometime for the holidays. Overall, the day was great and it was really nice hanging out with family. I will be posting some pix from the day as soon as I get them processed.

Stay tuned for more images with Ben & Cindy. I need to go as my little girl is getting ready for the 2:00-3:00 am feeding. I am going to deviate from this session tomorrow night so I can post some pix of Jayden's first Christmas along with her brother. I was also playing videographer today so I don't have too many shots. I do have enough though for a few posts.

Once again, I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and enjoyed time with your families.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas everyone! I can't believe how fast this year has gone. My baby girl is almost 8 months and my son is almost 9 years old. It's crazy how time flies once you have kids.

Posted tonight is an image of our friends Ben & Cindy. We always have a nice time hanging out with these two. This image was taken in Old Town after we stopped off to get some Mexican food last weekend. I thought the session was going to be tough considering Ben's height. One thing I should have noticed at the time of capture is the placement of Ben's right hand. He really is grabbing the wall! So many things to consider when posing people. Besides that, I really like this image. I dig the relaxed pose and I like how the door's darkness separates Ben from the background. Cindy's dark hair separates her from the white building. The sun was going down really fast but we were able to bounce around to about 5 different places to capture some shots. I will be posting more from this session as I process them. Thanks again you two for helping me out with my "multiple people" portraits. I really appreciate it.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas. Enjoy the time off and enjoy the time spent with family.

Back to the Ally

Here is to make up for the post with Rob yesterday. It's more of a "I got off my duff and finally moved everything to this blog" post. I should have some images in the archives that I should be able to post tonight or tomorrow. In the meantime, you will have to read my rants.

I am going to be trying to expand my stock portfolio while I am on vacation for a week and a half. I plan on doing some lighting with LED's. I know what I have in my mind so let's see if I can actually reproduce the images I want. I need to get the lights first and I plan on bringing in Rob for the shoot so we can collaborate. Speaking of Rob, I do have a post for tonight. Here is big bad Roberto striking a pose during the shoot with Ally. I don't know about you, but I would rather look at Ally posing for the camera!

A simple post turns lengthy

I love black & white images. B&W photos in magazines always catch my attention and this was the first thing I thought of when converting this. I wanted the image to have the feel of something you would see in Vogue or something similar. There's so much I like about this image. This is one of my favorites from the shoot. The pose was all Ally (I didnt' direct her at all in this shot) and everything just came together. The way her left leg runs parallel with the shape of the rock on the left. The gentle S-Curve with her left hand adds another dimension. And then there's the angle of her head which runs parallel with her right leg. The more I study this photo, it IS my favorite from the session.

I have been doing a lot more reading & studying lately to take my photography to the next level. A few months ago, I started getting bogged down and getting frustrated with my images. I felt like I was at a stand-still with my images and my post-processing. I would sit at the computer for hours on one image playing with different settings and get nowhere. I ended up having a 3 month break from photo sessions and I feel like the break I took was the best thing I could do. I started critiquing the crap out of my images and making a real assessment of where I was going with an image before I even touched a tool in Photoshop. There are a lot of great photographers out there and I can become frustrated easily when comparing my work to theirs. That's part of what drives me to outperform my last shoot. Take the good and the bad from a shoot and learn from it. More of my reading lately has to deal with the actual shoot and the posing. I feel really good about my latest post techniques but you need a great starting image. A lot of my late nights are spent looking at ads, watching movies, and I find myself watching more commercials on TV lately. It usually takes me a while to get through a movie because I am looking at the lighting or the camera angle and trying to dissect the shot so I can improve my abilities and give the client images that they are truly happy with.

I know I have said this what seems like a thousand times this week, but working with Ally was what I needed to get inspired again. I'm just giving credit where credit's due so thanks again Ally. And a huge thanks to Rob for setting up the shoot. Everything just came together at a perfect time for me.

I was just going to post the B&W image tonight but I wanted to see what people's opinions of the color shot were as well. For those that made it through the text of my post tonight, thanks for hanging in there while I aired some thoughts.

Oh yeah, I finally got around to updating my website to take out the wedding section considering I am concentrating on my portraiture and commercial-type work. I also changed the image on the home page to the B&W image posted tonight.

I will be posting a few more images over the weekend so check back in. Enjoy the weekend.

Ally continued

Considering I haven't posted any photos of Ally since Sunday, I decided to post 3 tonight! I have some more that I will be posting this weekend. Thanks again Ally for giving me such a great variety of photos to post. You rock. It's been another busy week with post-processing and trying to get some sleep. As you can see from the time of this post, sleep wasn't a priority tonight. Volleyball is going to be rough tomorrow at noon.

I would write some more but I need to get some sleep.

Just a reminder that I will also be updating this blog sometime over the next few days with all the archived posts from the old blog.

Let's Hear Your Opinions

I am curious to hear from my readers their opinions on the new blog. Hopefully what I am about to write doesn't bias your decision in any way. I just want to shed some light on my thoughts.

First off, let me cover the reasons for switching over to this blog. The ability for you all to leave comments was the major reason for moving my blog. I think it will be a lot easier for people to comment directly from the blog instead of writing an e-mail to let me know their thoughts. I also like the fact that you can subscribe to RSS feeds and get an update whenever I post. How this works right now, I have no idea. I know how it works for other people's blogs I have subscribed to but I still need to test this one out (I usually get an e-mail update from a few photographers and that is purdy sweeeeet). Hopefully this one works the same.

I'm also debating on whether to keep the white background with black text like the old blog or should I switch to a black background with the white text. Let's hear what you think.

Labels were another reason for switching over. If you look to the right side of the blog, underneath "blog archives", you will notice the element called "Labels". This blog allows me to add labels to a post so readers can sort the archived posts by these tags. For example, a reader wants to see the latest photos of my family (Jake & Jayden are the usual subjects). All the posts that have photos of my ninos will be labeled "Family". Once you click on this link, all the posts with that label will be displayed. It's a way for me to organize my posts to make it easier for whomever is viewing my blog. See that! I'm always thinking of you and how I can save your time in your busy schedules (my goal is to actually get you to spend more time looking at my photography which might not save you any time at all).

Now for the bad. First off, I can't stand the small photos that are linked to a bigger photo. I don't like unnecessary clicks and I wish I could upload a photo at the size I specify and it displays at that size. This was the main reason I created my old blog. I have yet to find out why blogger is like Microsoft Word in that it formats things in ways I don't want it to. That means more time for me to "play" with settings and still not get the results I am after. Secondly, I liked the way my old blog followed the design elements of my main website. It would be nice to have a seamless blog. A lot of time went into the design of my old site and I wish the blog matched.

So there you have my opinions on the new blog. Overall, I think the good far outweigh the bad. I still want to hear from you all though. Don't hold back. And if you do comment on this, thank you for taking the time to participate in my market research.

Now it's time to get back to processing some photos. By the way, I will be adding the previous posts from my old blog throughout the week.

Ally

In order to make up for my lack of posting last week, I will be posting images this week from today's photo shoot with Ally. She had contacted Rob a few weeks ago in regards to a photo session. I mentioned last month that Rob and I were working together more with our photography. Working with him pushes me even harder than I normally push myself. Rob is one of them dudes that is just naturally good at whatever he decides to pursue. About the only thing I can beat him at is Madden on XBOX360 (it probably helps that he usually chooses Detroit but hey, he's making that decision for himself). Anyway, not only does this make me push myself, it also gives us some time to hang out.

So Rob calls me the other day and says that the photo session is still on with Ally in spite of the weekend's rainy forecast. The weather was perfect today for some location shots. Working with Ally was a complete pleasure. I wish everyone I met was as nice as her and her dude, Joe. They were great to hang out with for the 4 hour session and Ally just worked the camera! It's a different ball game when you are working with someone who has experience modeling. She would tweak her pose in between shots which gave very subtle differences to ensure just the right look, which meant very little instruction from me on the posing. This allowed me to concentrate on the composition and get the shots I was looking for.

This image was taken in La Jolla and is one of many that will be posted this week as I work on the post-processing. I hope you enjoy (you can click on the photo to view it larger, which I highly recommend).

Ally was great to work with and I hope to arrange some more photo sessions with her in the near future.

Jayden's 1st Holiday Season

Sorry for the delay with last week's posts. Christmas is just around the corner. We went to Vegas a while back to see some friends we haven't seen in a long time and also to celebrate their son's 1st birthday. It was a wonderful weekend and it was a chance to photograph the party so the parents could enjoy the event. Craig and Christie were so kind to let us stay in their sweet pad for the extended weekend. Craig and Christie went all out for this party. The Harley theme set the mood for a good time for everyone invited. Mason had a blast digging into his cake. I'm just wondering how much cake he took in for this look (I think I looked like this after Thanksgiving).

Here's Mason's cool little VANS. It's all about the details during these times. Working with kids and dogs together is a total different dynamic. Patience plays a key role during these more formal sessions. This is why I block out a considerable amount of time when photographing families. It's all about having fun while getting the photographs. There's no need to induce stress by stacking appointments one on top of the other. The last time I photographed Pete & Linda's family, time was flying by and before I knew it, nap time was setting a precedence over the session. This time however, we alotted enough time to set up and get a bunch of shots.

I think Rachel was more excited about the lighting equipment than being photographed. Luckily, Pete set up a Dora DVD to get Rachel focused. I really want to do a location shoot with this family. Rachel has some great expressions that I think would come out if we were in a different setting.

I also want to thank Pete & Linda very much for becoming my first repeat customer! It's so cool when you leave a session and the client says, "We'll see you in May."

Post-Processing Techniques

It's time for another before/after segment. For tonight's images, I am using a photo of....you guessed it....Jake! This one was taken up at Dudley's Bakery a few weekends ago. The image was taken around 4:30 and the sun decided to move behind some clouds which diffused the light quite a bit. He was playing around this fence and peeped through at me when I told him to stop going onto the private property on which he is standing in this image. For those that are curious, I shot this with my 24-70mm f/2.8 lens set to ISO 100, 1/160 @ f3.2. The overall exposure is nice but the photo needs a bump in saturation & contrast.

I ran some actions but masked out the effect on the skin as I didn't like the saturation in the skin tones. I also ran an adjustment layer to get rid of the redness around the eyes. I finished off by darkening the edges of the frame to bring attention to the center of his face. Below is the final result.

I normally shoot with no color/tone/saturation adjustments in my camera as I like to have control over the final outcome in the image. I have tried different settings on my 20D but found I was having to do double the work on an image because I was trying to undo the adjustments so I would have a nice base image to work with.

I hope you all enjoyed tonight's post. The next couple days might not have any updates as I need to finish up some photos from recent photo shoots. It was nice having a 4 day weekend. I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday. We wanted the folks that are experiencing cold weather to realize why it is so expensive to live in Southern California. It's called the Sunshine Tax. Granted, it was a bit chilly but not that bad. Rob got some great shots of us which was nice because I'm not usually in the frame. He also got some great individual shots of the kids which hopefully he'll post on his site. I'm stoked that he and I are collaborating more with our photography.

In between setups, I grabbed my camera and rattled off a few shots myself (Rob can't have all the fun). And besides, who wants to see my mug when you can look at my beautiful wife and adorable kids? This was my first real attempt at doing some portraits on the beach at this time of day. I have read that the light changes fast but I didn't really have a clue until I started shooting and changing setups in a few minutes.

Posted tonight is a shot of Jess spending some time with Jayden. Jake was busy running around for Rob to get some panning shots (I'm sure Jake enjoyed the break from me snapping away at him) so I had Jess and Jayden all to myself. I broke out the 85mm fixed lens for this shot which made me work a little harder to compose the shot. Zoom lenses have a tendency to make me lazy and I haven't shot enough with the 85mm lens. I REALLY love this lens. It makes me push myself harder to get the shot I'm after.

I'm really happy with this photo. It's definitely marked for another project I'm currently working on!

78 to Ramona

First off, I would like to say Happy Thanksgiving to all who are reading this. Judging from e-mails, the list of viewers is growing which is really cool because it makes me want to post more! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. I finally fried my first turkey this evening and I'm wondering why I waited so long. My buddy Ev took the time out this last week to give me a lot of pointers and everything came out great. Thanks Ev for hooking me up. It was a big hit.

Now for the photography. Two weekends ago I was on my way to a buddy's house to help him out with his property. He lost his house in the Witch Creek fire and I have been going up there for the last few weeks to give him a hand and just help out wherever he needs the help. 78 was finally opened up again so I decided to stop and take some pix along the way. I was originally planning on keeping the color in this photo but decided to play around with some infrared post-processing techniques. I also decided for a square format as the right hand side of the frame didn't really add to the photo. I plan on taking some more landscape shots on our next mini-road trip to the mountains to see what else I can get.

I have some other photos scheduled to be posted this week so keep checkin' in.

Linda & Pete

I had another family session with Linda & Pete two weekends ago. They are a wonderful family to work with and I have enjoyed both sessions. This session was a little more formal and Pete saved the day with a portable DVD player and a Dora video. Thanks Pete for giving me the idea for working with kids. This was a fun session to shoot because of the dynamics involved.

The teaser photo from this shoot is of Linda & Pete. I have a few more from this shoot that I will be posting throughout the week so stay tuned.

For those that are holding me to my word, I have posted another image of Jake from last weekend. The photo is posted below yesterday's image so scroll down and check it out.

Julian

For the last two Sunday's, we have taken some mini-road trips to Julian. It's been nice getting outta the house and just hittin' the road. I like the small town feel that Julian has to offer. We met up with Rob and his family today and stopped in for lunch at the Julian Grille and then headed out to the various shops in town. I'm stoked that Rob is getting into this world of photography. We have started coordinating to shoot a lot more! We've been looking for some local talent so we can expand our portfolio and what we can offer. Hopefully there will be some more road trips in the near future, as well as attending some photo workshops.

For now, here's the big man Jake wishing I would photograph his sister. Last weekend's image will be posted tomorrow. I also have some images from a portrait session last weekend that will be posted this week.

Bate's Nut Farm

We obviously went before Halloween and I had every intention of posting these last week, but didn't. It was a busy week to say the least. I have a ton of pics to post for this month so hopefully I can get off my duff and get to postin'.

Here's a few to show off the chitlins as they played in the patch. Jake finally came around to being photoghraphed. He wasn't game for it at first but I used some Jedi mind tricks to get him to cooperate (video games can be a parent's best friend when you want to manipulate their little minds).

J-Dawg Gets Student of the Month

A big congratulations to J-Dawg for getting Student of the Month for September. This is the second time he has gotten this and we are real proud of him. It's a trip to watch him in class. He is such a fireball 99% of the time, but when he gets into the classroom, he just chills out and does a great job.

After the ceremony in front of the school, he was presented with an award in front of his class. The students then took some time to write little notes to explain why they thought he was awarded with Student of the Month. It was freakin' hilarious to read what some of these kids wrote.

Here's a shot of the big man after the ceremony. All the recipients got to stand up there so all the parents could grab some shots. I tried to get him to do his Guitar Hero face but he didn't do it. I might have to post a shot from the Oceanside shoot to show his "ultimate shreddin'" face.

Dream Wedding

Even though I mentioned last month that I am not shooting weddings for a while, I wanted to post an image from a wedding I shot with Scott Robert back in May. For those that have kept up with my ramblings, I started attending Scott's seminars a while ago. He e-mailed me a while back and asked if I wanted to assist him with a wedding. Of course I jumped on the opportunity. I didn't find out until about two weeks before the wedding who the actual bride and groom were. The bride, Penny, was a dancer for Britney Spears. The groom, Steel-O, is a dancer for Gwen Stefani. Needless to say, the day was sweeeeet!

We had just finished shooting the bride getting ready and as we walked out of the room, Scott saw the shadowed texture on this wall. While Scott was capturing his angle of Penny, I was off to the side capturing my own. The biggest lesson I learned that day was to constantly keep my eye looking for light and textures. For me, this is the biggest reward with photography. You look at the world with a keener eye and it makes you slow down and really look at things in a whole new way.

Seeing first-hand how Scott worked the wedding that day gave me such a boost of confidence. Penny & Steel-O were great with the camera and really opened up which made for some great images. When I do get back into weddings next year, the biggest thing I want to convey to the bride is how being open to ideas can produce great photographs. A big THANKS goes out to Scott for providing me with this experience. I will be posting more from this wedding as I process the images so stay tuned.

*All the images from this wedding were taken by me for Scott Robert Photography*

Surfin' with the Alien

Yes, I was one of the knuckleheads that stood in line for 3 hours of my life in order to get the midnight release of Halo 3. I was going to pick it up Tuesday morning but I figured it would be nice to wake Jake up with a fresh copy so we could play first thing in the morning. I ended up taking the day off and letting him take the day off from school so we could have some dad/son time without estrogen floatin' around the house. We beat the game on normal in a collective 8 hours. For those out there thinking that today's youth spends too much time inside, we also went to the park that evening and played football with my brother and then played frisbee football once the sun went down. Overall, we saw a lot of similarities between this one and the original Halo. The graphics rock. Our favorite level is STORM and nothing beats kickin' some alien ass while crankin' some System of a Down. Thanks Rob for the mix CD. Jake has a newfound appreciation for Motley Crue and Ratt.

For tonight's image, I did a fair amount of processing to come up with the one you are looking at now. This is the 4th version and the one I like the best. Rob thinks I should enter this one in some local contest. I have no idea how that works as I have never entered anything in any type of contest. I think it's time to push the envelope though. And yes, the title is a nod to Joe Satriani. I thought it was fitting for tonight's mix of text & visual. Let me know what you think.

Tower

I at least got up in time for the game today but the Chargers must have slept in. At least Denver lost today as well.

Enough about football. I'm continuing to post images from the Oceanside Harbor shoot. I tried a new processing technique on this image. It's more of an illustrated type look and I like the way it works on some landscape shots. I also tried it on the image I am going to post tomorrow and liked the way it came out. In the meantime, here's today's image. If anyone is still reading this, let me know what you think. I said I was going to post once a week, but this makes 2 days in a row. We went to Oceanside Harbor today to celebrate a 40th birthday party for my buddy Greg's wife Karla and her sister Marla. Luckily the weather turned out a lot nicer than expected. It seems a lot of people held off on going to the beach today which made it great for parking. The harbor is usually packed.

I was hoping to get to bed at a decent time tonight but I ended up spending a lot of time processing images from today's shoot. I think I have enough images from today to post every day this week so stay tuned. It's now 3:24a.m. and the Chargers game starts in about 6 and half hours so here's today's image. Hope you enjoy.

Where Does the Time Go

Sorry folks for the major delay in posting. I ended up taking a longer break than I expected. It was good though and I have come back totally refreshed. I am going to be taking on some new projects soon. My goal is to post an image a week for the next month. I would love to post more but I don't want to make promises I can't keep. I have a lot of respect for people that make the time to post every day to keep things interesting. For those who keep coming back, I appreciate the support.

I have made a decision to concentrate on expanding the portrait side of the business. I am putting weddings on the back burner for now. I am also starting a project soon that will portray different parts of San Marcos. I have a few projects in mind, but want to start off with this. The focus (pardon the pun) will be after the sun goes down. This is going to test the crap out of my processing skills as nighttime photography takes on a whole new dimension. The goal of these projects are to expand my capabilities, both in photography and post-processing, as well as giving myself something to strive for. I work a lot better under pressure.

In the meantime, I will still post photos of the kids so everyone can keep up to date. Here's an image of Jayden that I took the other night. Jess picked her up a cute little robe and she is just adorable in it. She is outgrowing her clothes quite quickly.

Making Progress

I finally launched the new site! It's taken a lot longer (a whole lot longer) than I thought it would but it's finally here. I'm curious to hear from my faithful readers on how they like it. Just drop me an e-mail with your comments. Just don't e-mail me saying you can't see the wedding portfolio. It's on my to do list and you know how long that can take. One day, I am going to implement a comment section on the blog. That's a whole 'nother thing that will hopefully add some more interaction with the site. In the meantime, take a look at the portrait portfolio and let me know what you think. I wanted to put a variety of pix so people know that they have options. I am trying to get some more environmental portraits so let me know if you'd be interested. San Diego's weather and location provides a lot of options!!!

In case you missed the update, the slideshows should be working in Firefox and IE. If for some reason you have issues with any browser, let me know and I will get on it. Another month has passed and I finally got around to processing some more photos. Our little girl is definitely getting bigger. She had a doctor's appointment today and weighed in at a nice 10 lbs. 4 oz. Looks like Mama has been feeding her the good stuff. We ended up making the transition to formula on Saturday. It was kinda tough on Jess but I think she is enjoying the nights we have been having. Jess actually got a full night of sleep last night. I ended up staying up way late (a mix of working on photos and working on some upcoming features for the site) and I kept looking at the clock. Jayden was supposed to wake at about 2:00 for a feeding. 2:00 came and I continued to work. Then 3:00 came. Still no crying. Then 4:00 came and I finally crashed. I woke up at 7:30 and Jess asked if I had fed Jayden throughout the night. "Nope. I thought you woke up to feed her after I crashed," I said. Needless to say, a full night of sleep was definitely good for Mama. Anyway, enough of my rambling on. Let's good to the goods.
A full tummy makes for happy baby!

And now for one of the things I have been meaning to set up for a while: before and afters. Here is a before shot of my baby girl while sleeping (whoever said little girls sleep a lot more than boys must have been kidding). Anyway, I wasn't able to set up my lights (not enough room or time).

Some may wonder why it takes a while to process photos. I was reading an article last night on digital metamorphosis and it summed up some of the processes I go through once an image is opened. I go through a mental process of what I want the image to convey. This is the artsy part that is fun but can be frustrating. For this next image, I wanted to convey a night time sleeping shot. Could I have set up the studio lights to get the same results? The answer is yes, but time was the determining factor. So here is the final image...

I think I have found my next studio lighting project!

This next series was taken in the early afternoon. After a few e-mails and a few personal confrontations, I guess it's time to update some pix. The good news, I HAVE taken some new pix of my little girl. The bad news, I haven't processed them yet. They are sitting in their folder waiting patiently for me to get to them. I am almost finished with the re-design of the site, which has been taking longer than I expected. A lot longer. I finally purchased some software yesterday that should speed up some of my design issues, but I found out at about 4:00 this morning that Firefox and Internet Explorer don't want to play nice with each other. So the saga continues. Anyway, here is a pic of Jake that I finally processed last night.

Time Stops for Nobody

I can't believe how fast this week is going. It is literally flying. Our baby girl is 4 days old and doing really well. Momma and Jayden came home Wednesday so we have been busy with the adjustments and trying to get caught up on sleep. Jacob is an extreme help. He has been nothing short of spectacular with getting up and rockin' and rollin' in order to get to school. He has been really focused on helping out with his little sister. He has only played video games for about a half hour this week and for those that know Jake, that is just crazy.

Here are some more pix that I worked on tonight. There will be more coming in the next couple days. I just wanted to post some more from this week and keep you all posted.

Here's Jayden after getting ready for nighty-night. She loves to wake up at about 10:00p.m. and start her night. Jess and I are still tripping out on the amount of hair she has. Mom is doing great and is recovering nicely. In the meantime, I am tending to getting Jake to school and then making my way between the hospital and Jake's school. I'm so used to the normal routine of going to work while Jess takes care of Jake. Needless to say, this week is going to be interesting. Jake has already expressed his concern with my ability to play "mom" for a while.

Here is our sweet baby girl already getting used to daddy taking pictures! In our case, we are always trying to see how much we can cram into a 24 hour period. Needless to say, I have been lagging.

Tonight was kind of trippy. We dropped off Jake at his grandparents house to stay the night. As Jess and I were walking into a store, I mentioned to her that it was weird that instead of waking up and picking up Jake, we are going to wake up and go have our second child. Having a scheduled C-section is kinda weird like that. Anyways, enough of my rambling on at 1:20a.m. Here are just a few of the shots that we have done since Jess got pregnant.

The shot above is the one we used for one of the few baby showers we had.

Jess also wanted to get some shots at the beach yesterday showing her and Jake's relationship. They are truly fun to watch. As most people know, Jess keeps me in check on a daily basis. On the other hand, Jake can get Jess wrapped around his finger in a heart beat. She is a great mom and I just love to sit back and watch these two. Jess has truly enjoyed the one on one time her and Jake have had over the last 8 years!

That's going to be it for now. This year we stayed at Lake Gregory which is about 2000 feet below Big Bear mountain. Jess' sister Monica was kind enough to invite us to stay in the cabin for a few days. The cabin has a wonderful view of the lake from the balcony and was a perfect place for chilling out and playing guitar, although Monica might have thought differently. Here's a shot of Jess by the window that leads out to the balcony.

And here is a shot of Jake as he was heading down the stairs

Jake was ready to find some snow so we set out for a place to set up a battle ground for a snowball fight. There is a school about a mile from the cabin that had a nice spot where we eventually ended up. After about an hour of pelting each other with snowballs, Jess had found another spot where we could go. It happened to be a perfect spot to try out my new lens that Jess got me for Christmas (85mm 1.8, which is competing very hard with the 70-200 to become my favorite lens).

You can see in the last photo how wet Jake was getting from playing in the snow and he quickly realized why being cold is not the most fun thing in the world. He soon found his way to the car where the heater provided the right amount of comfort he needed. The little coffee house we went to right after this helped out as well. Luckily, Jess was a willing participant for the lens battle and didn't mind posing for me.

On the way to the coffee house, Jess saw this view of the lake as we were driving around.

The 3-day stay went by way too quick. It wasn't cold enough for snow to fall the night we got there so hopefully next year Jake and the "little one" will get their first winter with actual falling snowflakes. Hopefully we find out for sure what we are having on our next visit to the doc. Once we find out, I can replace "little one" with Jayden. I hope we can stay at the same cabin next year. The place is huge and has a very cozy feel to it. I still have a few more photos I am going to be posting over the next few days so check back often. We hope everyone had a nice Christmas and enjoyed the holiday season!

Harumi & Larry's Wedding

Harumi and Larry officially tied the knot at Castle Creek Inn located north of Escondido. The last time I was there was about 5 years ago to play a round of golf. Larry is a retired Marine who is a great person and a great friend. I had scoped out the location the weekend prior to the wedding and the overcast skies were very pleasing as far as photography is concerned. Being that we are in sunny southern California, the sun was in full swing on the actual day of the wedding so I had to make a few minor adjustments. Here are a few of the photos of Harumi prior to the wedding. Harumi, you look wonderful!

After the ceremony, we stepped outside to grab a few photos and here is one of my favorites!

This little girl is just too cute. Jess had been wanting to go to Universal Studios this summer but I had been working on the business side of my photography. I have also been laid up for a couple weeks with a torn calve muscle (and who said volleyball wasn't a contact sport)! I had planned a meeting with Scott Robert and I actually became more than just a hat rack. Pasadena's right next to Universal Studios so why not just make a weekend out of it? I have been impressed with Scott's work and figured he could really help me out. At times, weddings can be a big challenge. Either the light's just not optimum or you want to get a better angle but you don't want to miss the moment that is taking place. At times, you just have to get the shot in spite of the situation. I know what I want to convey but the shot is dictated by the situation at hand. Take the example of Jake in the following photographs. As we were walking around (walking off a killer dinner we ate at Mijares - I highly recommend the Baja Special), Jake was running around. He was literally climbing up the walls. I noticed the light being cast on the wall and thought it would be a cool shot. So I had him stand there on this little ledge where the light was just falling on his face. The shot is cool but it just needs a little seasoning to make him stand out.

...and BAM! (am I watching to much Emeril??) This is what I was seeing in my head! Just a little more drama needed to be added. The image was captured with a Canon 20D w/50mm prime, ISO 1600, f/2.0 @ 1/125 sec.

The next image was taken just around the corner from the first shot and I wanted to get him just chilling out. I was actually just finishing up some pix with Jess and Jake had sit down next to this wall. If you look closely, you can see a drop of sweat dripping down by his ear (I told you he was running around like a banshee).

..and the conversion. The highlights on the right are still a little funky but it's 2:00a.m. and I need to post some pix. Image was shot with a Canon 20D w/50mm prime, ISO 1600, f/2.2 @ 1/50 sec.

This last photo was inside this cool outdoor mall. I just really like the colors in the sign. Image was shot with a Canon 20D w/50mm prime, ISO 1600, f/2.8 @ 200th.

The weekend was a blast. Jess enjoyed getting back to Universal Studios and I got some time to photograph in a new area. Pasadena is beautiful and very historic. I would like to get back there soon. There are some really nice places to photograph (Westin Hotel is next on the list). It had been 22 years since I had been to Universal Studios and the place was cool.

A little side note before capping off the night. There is a lower level at Universal Studios and there are a series of escalators that take you down there (5 series total). There are also stairs that run parallel with the escalators (about 500 steps total). If your child decides to take the stairs on the way back up to the top level as Jake did, your quads better well be rested. I remember those days of endless energy and man do I miss them.

Janna & Mike

Mike and Janna were married in La Jolla on this wonderful day. I was fortunate to be asked by a fellow photographer and friend, Melinda Del Toro, to assist with photographing this fun and energetic couple. The weather did not start out particularly well, but the sun made every attempt to not put a damper on the day's events. I had the pleasure of photographing the groom and his party and then it was off to La Jolla for the ceremony. Mike is a very down to earth person and was very cool to work with.
